South West Open – Phoenix – WISPA 14-17 September $12,000

I flew from Doha to Washington DC to on 3 September.  It is a really long flight to the USA with a big time difference and I wanted to take the opportunity to adjust and settle and get some quality training in before the tournament in Phoenix began.  After arriving I was able to watch the final stages of the WISPA Dread series number one in DC which was eventually won by my friend and South African team mate Siyoli Waters in a hard fought battle against another close friend Lauren Selby, from England.

After the end of the tournament I headed to Baltimore to train with an old friend of my brother Lefika Ragontse who is based as a coach at the Bare Hills Racquet and Fitness Club.  It is an amazing set up there and it was great to get some work in while adapting to the 7 hour time difference and getting over the 14 hour flight from Doha.  I had had a very long break this summer travelling around Italy for a few weeks  and I really needed to find my feel around court again before playing competitively.

I headed to Phoenix on US Air on 13 September.  Aside from the excitement of playing again I also couldn’t wait to get to Phoenix to see my friend Tenille van de Merwe the South African number 1 who was also a bridesmaid at my wedding last year.  Tenille and I are very close and it was going to be great to see her.

We were sharing a billet together in Pheonix at Susan Vasquez’s home.  I was lucky enough to stay at Susan’s last year at the same event and she is a wonderful host and really makes you feel at home.  This year Susan had invited Tenille to stay with me so I was looking forward to seeing both of them again.

Susan Vasquez and Me at Southwest Open

After a couple of days adjusting to yet another flight (5 hours) and time difference (3 more hours from Baltimore) it was time to for the tournament.  In the first round I would be playing the 6th seed Miranda Ranieri from Canada (currently ranked 44 in the world).

On the morning of the match I felt really good.  I was up for the game and in my hits during the week I had felt accurate.  However, once on court with Miranda things changed.  I did not feel under an enomous amount of pressure from her but I made a huge number of unforced errors.  I hit far too many tins and was simply not accurate in my execution of the basics.  Perhaps my expectations were too high after such a long lay off over the summer but the match ended 3-0 to Miranda (11-7, 11-9, 11-2) and I felt very disappointed.

On reflection I realise my preparation had not been the best for the very high standard of a WISPA tournament.  I had spent 4 weeks in Italy and another 4 weeks relaxing in the UK and Doha without much serious training.  I cannot expect to compete against the best in the world with this run up to a tournament.  I will have several weeks of training and playing before my next event the Dread Series number 2 in Washington DC on 14 October.

My friend Tenille won her first round match in a hard fought 5 gamer against the young Egyptian Salma Hany.  Unfortunately Tenille lost her ¼ final match against the number one seed and evenutal winner Latasha Khan.

After a couple of days enjoying Susan’s hospitality in sunny Phoenix Tenille and I flew together to New York.  We had hoped to play there in the Carol Weymuller event but an extremely strong field meant we were not even able to secure a spot in qualification.  Our tickets had been booked though so we took the opporunity to visit NYC and see the sights in that amazing city.  No place like it on earth.

Back to training for me in Baltimore where I will be based until the Dread event in DC in October.

First round match – WISPA Pyramides

WISPA Pyramides first round.  It was the first time that I played Natalie Grinham. I knew she is fast and hits some good drops but when I got on court she was more deceptive than I thought. The first game started well, she surprised me with her random drops from the back of the court which I struggled to pick up. I got frustrated in the match because no matter where I put the ball Natalie was there with time to spare. Trying my best to keep the ball tight and deep was not enough and I lost 11-5 11-4 11-3. It was a great experience and I really enjoyed myself.   Natalie went on to the finals where she eventually lost to the French number 1 Camille Serme (world number 10)

Watching the rest of the matches I saw some things I need to work on in my game.

I made the best of my time in France and went to visit Disneyland Paris and did some sightseeing once I was out of the tournament.

Finally in France

Boarding the plane in Cape Town, Tenille and I were very excited to come to Paris. After a 2 hour flight to Johannesburg, we were anxious to board out Air France flight to Paris only to learn that we had a 12 hour delay! The trip continued to be a bit of a nightmare with trying to find somewhere to sleep, more train delays etc, half a day after we thought we were going to be here in Le Port Marly we finally arrived 2 very tired squash players.

No surprise when we only woke up at 10:30, missed our hotel breakfast and then had to go find the only restaurant that sells a breakfast in town. The Pyramides club where we will be playing the tournament is amazing, it has facilities you can only dream of.

We had a short practice session and then we spent the rest of the day by the pool, watching some Wimbledon and then watching our friend from SA Siyoli Waters in her qualification match.

Today (30 June) the main draw is starting and we are having a quick practice in the morning and then my match against Natalie Grinham (former world number 2) is at 17:15.

Western Province Open

A day after nationals the WP Open started, the first 2 rounds were played at the Western province Cricket Club, which has one of the most spectacular views of table mountain.

I did not manage to get a good draw for the tournament, I was unseeded and had to play a junior player who is talented, Chanelle Erasmus.  I won the match but she put me under some pressure and took the first game. I was a bit shocked when I started hitting the ball and it did not go to the back of the court. Playing at sea level is very different to playing at altitude in Johannesburg.  Fortunately, I managed to pull it together and win the match 3-1.

My quarter final match was against number 3 seed, Siyoli Waters who i played in the Nationals on Saturday. The match was pretty much the same as at the nationals. I won the first game, then i was up in the 2nd and lost the game and the rest of the match. I was very disappointed but Siyoli played some magnificent shots and  I just could not manage to get into the game.

There are no play offs so that is the end of the tournament for me, I have 4 days before I leave to play a WISPA tournament in Paris, WISPA des Pyramides

I did some training today and tomorrow I will be going for a massage to loosen up my body for the next tournament.  My good friend and 2011 SA National Champion, Tenille Swartz, will be playing in the final so I will go to watch and help her if she needs some advice.

Nationals

SA Nationals 2011 brings together all the South African players from across the country and the world to compete for the South African National title.  This year the event will be held at Parkview Squash Club until the semi final stage when it will move to the glass court at Wanderers Cricket Club (the usual venue for the whole event).

There are a number of WISPA and PSA players competing in the event and plenty of the other players would certainly do well on tour.

Monday was the first round of Nationals, I beat a young player from Pretoria 3-0, the match was very short and sweet.   It is nice to get a quick early win under your belt

In Round two I played Allushka Botha who after the first 2 games gave me a little surprise and won the 3rd game. She is a good young player who has alot of talent.

On Wednesday in the Quarter finals I played Cheyna Tucker who was seeded 4 in the tournament. It was a tough match but I managed to win the first 2 games , then she came back firing at me and I dropped the 3rd game, I was all fired up and managed to finish the match off in 4 games.  A 3-1 win in front of a good crowd at Parkview squash club

Semi finals which was today (Thursday) against Milnay Louw, the same player I lost to in the Northerns Open. I played better than last week but I was still very disappointed not to win.  Milnay is a very strong player and I need to adapt my game better to exploit her weaknesses.

Tomorrow I have a rest day and then its the playoffs for 3rd and 4th place on Saturday. I will be relaxing by going to watch a movie at the cinema with my dear squash pal Tenille van der Merwe.  Tenille won won her semi final match today against Siyoli Waters and will be playing in the finals on saturday.

After the tournanament I will have half a day off and then will be flying to Cape Town for the Western Province Open, which starts on Monday. I cant wait to have the lovely scenery of the Cape to enjoy!

Northerns Open

The Northerns satellite tournament was really well run.  It was hosted by the Pretoria Country Club which is a beautiful venue with some amazing facilities.

I won my first round match 3-0 against Helen Walsh.  In the next round I played Cara Fourie who is a very good player, we were the same age group in juniors.  Our games were very tight but I managed another 3-0 win.

On Wednesday I played the current south African number 1, Milnay Louw, in the semi final. Unfortunately, Milnay was too strong for me and I lost 3-0. I was disappointed to not even get a game, but it was not my day. I played the 3/4 play offs against a good friend Sonica Fritz and ended in 3rd place after a 3 0 win. A good start to my tour and a good warm up for Nationals.

Family challenge

I came to Parys, a little town in the Free State for the weekend with my brother and my sister-in-law.

Alwin, my brother, has been the family squash champion for 20 years now and every year when I come to South Africa we have a challenge. Alwin is a left hander and taught me a lot about squash and knows all my weaknesses. I have almost beaten him on many occasions but this week I  finally managed to take the crown.

We played early on a freezing cold court at the Parys Golf Club and I started well winning the first game, however Alwin came back and won the second and third.  I tried to stay calm and use some good volley drops to get him moving around and managed to get the fourth. In the fifth game we were neck and neck and had some very intense rallies but I won 11-9 and was very happy. We had a little crowd that was watching too so I have my witnesses!

We spent the rest of the day without any electricity or water, not great but you just get on with things in the bush. We had dinners by candlelight and instead of telly we got to chat more around the dinner table.

Sunday morning we went down to the courts again, this time not for a challenge but to train. I have a tournament starting tomorrow in Pretoria, so I was sharpening up with some conditioned games and got Alwin to feed me some shots to practise. We will be having lunch with the Mylod family and then be watching the Roland Garros Men’s final, before driving back to Joburg.  It has been a very nice weekend here in Parys, its a very old, small little town where people live simple lives. I have enjoyed being away from the hustle and bustle of cities.

Draw for the Northern’s Squash Association Tournament in Pretoria

First few days in Joburg

I arrived in Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon, rented a car and drove straight through to my brother Alwin’s house where I will be staying for almost 3 weeks.

I met with a good friend from university, Theresa, for breakfast on Wednesday morning and am just starting to settle into the way of life here.

Later on I went for a practice at my old home, the University of Johannesburg ,where I did some routines and played some games. After about ten minutes I looked up to see SA squash legend Mike Tootill who was coaching some young and upcoming students. It was nice to see familiar faces and chat to some old friends but dinner was waiting back home so I coudln’t stay long :) !

Thursday morning I did a plyometic session and later I will train with a old uni mate who I first met when we played in the same Country Districts u/16 team. Douglas Sammons is a good Gauteng player who gives me a good run around on the court.

This weekend I will be traveling to Parys to train with my brother for the weekend, really looking forward to it.

One day before SA

Every muscle is my body is hurting today, thanks to the speed/power session at bootcamp last night. www.bootcampqatar.com
I was up at 8am this morning, had my oats breakfast and went off to train a client. Now i am back at home trying to pack for 6 weeks in South Africa.
Trying to pack lightly is not easy and I am having to be strict with myself! 3pm I have a squash lesson with Dan Jenson who helps me with my technical game on court.
Later on I will be going to dinner at a nice fish restuarant with my family, think I will have some sushi and squid, yum! then its time for an early night because I will have to be at the airport at 5am for my flight to Johannesburg ;-( not a fan of early mornings!

Preparations

It’s a nice day in Doha, not too hot today. I have two days left before I leave for South Africa.
This morning I was up at 7:20am to personal train a client and then I then it was time for my training at Khalifa with Mark Roberts.
We did some routines on the court and then we played a match. Mark is one of the top players here in Doha and has been helping me sharpen up.
I have a week before I play in my first tournament  which will be in Pretoria and then Nationals is the week after that.
In total I will be playing 5 tournaments in South Africa before coming back to Doha.

The rest of my day I coached squash, then went for lunch and am resting a bit before I have another client to train and then I will do a speed session with the bootcampers tonight at 6pm.
